Storage-

Oil impregnated bronze bearings can be stored for considerable periods without deterioration or loss of oil if kept in metal or other non-absorbent containers. Paper, cloth, and cardboard are not appropriate for storing bearings as they will wick oil out of the bushings.  Plastic re-sealable bags are preferred.  Store oil impregnated bronze bearings at room temperature.  Proximity to heat could cause oil loss by sweating, in which case re-oiling is necessary before installation.  Wash in oil if storage conditions are in doubt.

Re-Oiling

After machining of the bearings or following loss of oil during storage, immerse in high quality mineral oil (SAE 30) at 140 degrees F to 160 degrees F for 10 to 15 minutes and then cool in cold oil.

Fitting and Installation

Before installing make sure that all sharp edges are removed from the housing and mating shaft.  The bearing must be free from grit and dust.  Oil impregnated bronze bearings are usually installed by means of a shouldered arbor plug inserted into an arbor press.  A chamfer in the housing bore is necessary to serve as a lead for the bearing.  An un-chamfered edge might shear metal from the bearing OD, seriously reducing the press fit.  The OD chamfer on the lead edge of the bearing acts as the pilot, and the ID chamfer in the bearing serves as the lead when the shaft is inserted.  Any out of roundness condition is corrected when the bearing is pressed into the housing.
